Samyang 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC is a fast, manually focused wide-angle lens available for the most popular DSLR or mirrorless system cameras with sensors up to 24x36 mm (full-format). An excellent lens for documentary and street photography, but also for landscape or every day photography.
Mounted on a camera with APS-C sensor, it becomes a fast normal lens and on models with Micro Four Thirds sensor (Olympus and Panasonic) a telephoto lens ideal for portraits.
A wide and smooth manual focus ring provides excellent handling and a 77 mm thread makes it possible to use filters. The lens also comes with a detachable hood to prevent stray light from reaching the front element.
Optical construction
Samyang 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC has been designed with 12 elements mounted in 10 groups. Two elements are made from HR glass (High Refractive), which keeps the lens size and weight at a reasonable level while also providing very good resolution. An aspheric element is used to minimize spherical aberration and ensures high sharpness all the way to the edges even at large apertures.
In addition, a so-called floating lens design is used to provide good image quality even at close range (minimum focus is 30 cm). Samyang's Ultra Multi Coating counteracts reflexes and ghosting and ensures that the images always have maximum contrast and a natural color reproduction.
Automatic aperture control in the AE version
AE designated versions of the Samyang 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC are equipped with motorized aperture control and CPU chip to allow for automatic exposure (AE). This means the aperture can be adjusted by the camera. In addition, these versions of the lens provides support for viewfinder focus indication to facilitate manual focusing.
NOTE: The lens is available in two versions with Canon EF mount; One version with and one without AE support (only EF in the designation). The latter requires the aperture to be manually controlled with a mechanical ring on the lens. The Nikon version of the lens is only available with AE support. As for other mounts, only mechanical aperture control is available.
