New product
Do you like to get out in nature? And want to get around easily? Then Kowa has added a new spotting scope to their prominar series. The Kowa Spotting Scope TSN-66S Prominar is a compact variant with the same fluorite crystal lenses and coatings as the well-known TSN-88A. So you are assured of even higher light transmission resulting in a spotting scope that delivers even higher levels of light wavelength transmission than comparable 66mm objective lens models. It provides nature's most natural colour across the entire colour spectrum.
In addition to its compact size, you benefit from a lower weight due to a 100% magnesium alloy body and it is also stronger overall. So the TSN-66S is easy to carry and has a fully waterproof and nitrogen-filled body. An upgraded Kowa KR coating on the optics makes the scope incredibly reliable and robust.
Like the TSN-88 and TSN-99 variants, the body features a pure fluorite crystal lens which, when combined with a Kowa XD lens, delivers superior low-light performance. This special combination, plus enhanced optical coatings virtually eliminates chromatic aberration, even at high magnification. Because the TSN-66S is equipped with a dual focusing mechanism, the image can be quickly and accurately focused with just your index finger - in just a few fluid revolutions. The fine focusing mechanism provides the final control to view the image razor-sharp.
You are now looking at the Kowa TSN-66S Prominar spotting scope. Note that you still need to add your own eyepiece. You can choose between a Kowa TE11WZ II with 25-60x magnification or the TE-80XW. The TE-11WZ II is a zoom eyepiece with a magnification of 25-60x, while the TE-80XW has a fixed magnification of 35x, but with a wide angle of no less than 80°. The large field of view makes this eyepiece ideal for digiscoping!
Both eyepieces are fully waterproof and feature a three-position Twist-up eyepiece ring. This allows you to adjust the distance between your eye and the eyepiece. Thus, both glasses and non-glasses wearers have a pleasant viewing experience.
Check out the specifications of the TSN-66S in combination with these eyepieces further down the description. If you want to buy the 66S in combination with the TE-11WZ II eyepiece, find the kit under optional accessories.
Chromatic aberration occurs due to the diffusion of light and the different wavelengths of light that concentrate at different positions, which can result in a red or purple border around the subject. The optimal optical material to minimize chromatic aberration is Fluorite Crystal. For the convex lens of the TSN-66A/66S, a Fluorite Crystal with extremely low dispersion characteristics is used. Instead of an ordinary optical glass lens, the hollow lens in combination with the Fluorite Crystal lens is made of glass with special dispersive properties to further reduce chromatic aberration. This combination virtually eliminates chromatic aberration and redefines the standards for color brilliance.
Fluorite crystal is only used in the top models of Kowa.

An eyepiece should not be missing when purchasing a Spotting Scope. Without an eyepiece you can't see anything. Below is an overview of the eyepieces that fit the TSN-66S with the corresponding specifications:
TE-11WZ II | TE-80XW | ||
---|---|---|---|
Magnification | 25x | 60x | 35x WIDE |
Eye relief in mm | 17,0 | 17,0 | 17,0 |
Exit pupil in mm | 2,6 | 1,1 | 1,9 |
Brightness | 6,8 | 1,2 | 3,6 |
Twilight factor | 40,6 | 62,9 | 48,1 |
Field of view in ° | 2,4 | 1,3 | 2,6 |
Field of view / 1000m in m | 42,0 | 23,0 | 45,0 |
ExtenderWhen a Kowa TSN-EX16 extender is placed between the Kowa TSN-66S and the eyepiece, the magnification is increased by as much as 1.6 times. In combination with the TE-11WZ eyepiece, a magnification of 40-96x can now be achieved. The video shows how easy it is to place the extender between the eyepiece and the Kowa spotting scope. |
With the use of a Kowa Astronomy adapter, the TSN-66S can also be used for night-time celestial observation and photography. For this purpose a universal 1.25" astro eyepiece can be used.
Two variants are available; the TSN-AS1.25K has knurled screws with which eyepieces can be tightened by hand. This allows you to quickly change eyepieces. The TSN-AS1.25G is supplied with an Allen key. The advantage is that there are no protruding screws visible. The video shows how easy it is to mount the astro adapters to the Kowa spotting scope with a 1.25" eyepiece. |
By using the TSN-PA7A, you connect the TSN-66S directly to your DSLR camera by means of an optional T2 ring. This creates a powerful yet lightweight and compact telephoto lens compared to traditional telephoto lenses. The video shows how easy it is to place the TSN-PA7A over the eyepiece of the Kowa spotting scope. |
The TSN-DA10 is perfect for the compact and lightweight Micro Four Thirds cameras. Using the TSN-DA10 and an optional adapter ring, everything is ready for use within a minute. The optional adapter ring is available in various sizes, depending on the filter size of your lens: AR28/30/30.5/37/43/46/52/55/58/62/72mm. The video shows how easy it is to connect the TSN-DA10 to the spotting scope. |
If you would like to make photo and video recordings with your smartphone, this can be done by using a Kowa Smartphone adapter which is specially made for your smartphone. This smartphone adapter is a protective cover that can remain in place around your smartphone and offers protection against falls and knocks. This smartphone adapter simply slides onto the eyepiece of the TSN-66S by means of a TSN-AR11WZ adapter ring and the whole thing is ready for use. The video shows how easy it is to slide the smartphone adapter onto the eyepiece of the Kowa spotting scope. |
If no adapter for your smartphone is available, please inform us about this. In many cases it is no problem for Kowa to develop an adapter for your smartphone.
To protect your valuable Kowa TSN-66S, you can choose to complete it with the accessories listed below:
Tripod use
When looking through the spotting scope for long periods, it is wise to use a tripod. A tripod allows you to fully focus on the subject. The Kowa TSN66S spotting scope is equipped with both 1/4" and 3/8" threaded connections. However, it is important to buy a tripod that has the right height and perhaps choose one with a fluid-damped head. A tripod with a fluid-cushioned head moves more fluidly and prevents the spotting scope from overshooting once you have the subject in focus.
