The Laowa Probe 24mm f/14 is a macro lens unlike any other. The original design allows you to look at the world up close, or even very close. Marvel at unusual perspectives and even look under the surface of water. The lens in the Cine version is equipped with gear rings to facilitate the work with professional sharpening systems.
The unusual look of the lens is not a whim of the designers. It was dictated by the tasks it has to cope with. The lens measures 41 cm in length, and its front optical element is only 2 cm in diameter. This allows you to get discreetly close to the photographed objects and reach places previously unreachable.
The large reproduction scale (2:1) and short minimum focusing distance (20 mm from the front lens) will allow you to discover the world of macro photography from a previously unknown side. You will be able to photograph insects in their natural habitat, creep unnoticed through a thicket of leaves or look inside a bottle. The infinity focus allows you to create the perfect composition.
The long, all-metal barrel of the lens hides an extremely sophisticated optics, consisting of as many as 27 lenses, arranged in 19 groups. The focal length of 24 mm provides a field of view of 85°. Thanks to this you will be able to show your subject in terms of the scenery in which it is located, and also retain much more detail than with conventional macro lenses.
Precision workmanship and top-quality materials guarantee excellent imaging performance. The manual focus and aperture rings operate smoothly, providing the necessary resistance for precise operation.
Such advanced optical design and the size of the front element significantly reduce the amount of light reaching the sensor. The minimum aperture is only f/14, which means that the photographed plan must be well lit. However, the manufacturer of the lens – Venus Optics did not leave its child in the dark without a secret weapon. Nine LEDs, forming a miniature ring light around the front lens, allow you to effectively illuminate the subject even in complete darkness. The lamp can be powered from an external power source (such as a power bank) using the included USB cable.
What else can you do with a wide-angle macro lens of an unusual shape, additionally equipped with a ring LED lamp? Well, you can put it under water! The front element (20 cm from the front lens) of the Laowa Probe 24 mm f/14 has been sealed against moisture, dust and weather. You can immerse it in an aquarium, a lake or a fizzy drink with bubbles without worry. This opens up great possibilities in aquarium, product and culinary photography or video applications.
Caution: flooding the USB port may damage the lens.
The Laowa Probe 24mm f/14 is available with Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony E, Arri PL mounts. Combined with a wide range of bayonet adapters, you’ll mount the lens on virtually any camera from leading manufacturers’ offerings.
The Cine version of the lens will certainly be of interest to filmmakers. It is equipped with gear rings facilitating cooperation with follow focus systems. The standard version (without gears) is also available on sale, designed especially for photographers.
